Raleigh, N.C. (June 20, 2016) – WRAL has released an upgraded over-the-top (OTT) app on Roku and launched its first app for Amazon’s Fire TV, enabling more viewers to watch live newscasts and streamed events alongside curated, on-demand video content.
WRAL was one of the first local TV stations to launch OTT efforts in 2010, when it debuted an app for Roku and other connected devices, delivering about a dozen local news clips and weather forecasts. The latest OTT apps offer entire newscasts and other live videos, where demand has exploded in recent years.
The WRAL OTT apps provide a richer viewing experience, allowing viewers to stream WRAL News live and watch other live events, including Carolina Railhawks games, legislative hearings and high-profile trials. Viewers also get direct access to weather forecasts, DUALDoppler5000 radar and popular features such as WRAL documentaries, Tar Heel Traveler and Restaurant Ratings.
WRAL’s OTT app for Apple TV will launch this summer. That will give WRAL a presence on the top four OTT platforms based on household penetration numbers released this month by comScore. WRAL videos already can be viewed via Chromecast from the recently updated WRAL News app.

A recent comScore report shows OTT devices as the fourth most common Internet access points behind desktops, smartphones and tablets. The same report reveals Roku as the dominant device in American homes, accounting for nearly half of the OTT devices in use.
The WRAL OTT apps are feed-based, enabling immediate content updates from the newsroom as video is published. They are also fully integrated with Google’s DoubleClick for Publishers, making it possible for video ads to be served locally and targeted to specific types of content.
Future updates of the WRAL OTT apps will incorporate search functionality and even more live streaming content.
